In situ hybridization is a widely used technique for studying gene expression. Here, we describe two experiments addressed to postgraduate genetics students in which the effect of transcription factors on gene expression is analyzed in Drosophila embryos of different genotypes by whole-mount in situ hybridization. In one of the experiments, students analyzed the repressive effect of Snail over rhomboid expression using reporter lines containing different constructs of the rhomboid neuroectodermal enhancer fused to the lacZ gene. Calculation and inversion of two-dimensional gravity in the vicinity of Lake Tuz, Turkey

Abstract An example of gravity inversion and interpretation is presented which demonstrates how a priori information can be used to derive reliable, though complex models. In this case, the geometry of the studied model profile has been constructed on the basis of seismic and geological data. The densities used in the forward calculations were obtained from laboratory measurements of drill cores, from density-velocity relationships, and from Nettleton’s method of fitting gravity and topography. German bank lending to industrial and non-industrial countries: driven by fundamentals or different treatment?

This paper shows that the substantial disparity in German bank lending towards industrial (IC) and non-industrial (Non-IC) countries is largely explained by differences in countries' endowments and only to a minor extent by German banks' different treatment of these country groups. This is demonstrated by applying a decomposition technique to an augmented gravity model that is estimated for German foreign lending using a new micro panel data-set on individual claims from the Deutsche Bundesbank covering the period from 1996 to 2002.

Application of the International classification of functioning, disability and health in Taiwan : victory of the medical model

AbstractSince July 2012, eligibility for disability benefits and services in Taiwan has been assessed based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. This study examines disabled people’s experiences of this new assessment system: does it incorporate the social model or a multidimensional understanding of disability and assess the needs of disabled people adequately? In-depth interviews were employed with 24 disabled persons to answer these questions from the perspective of disabled people. Exposure to N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea in adult mice alters structural and functional integrity of neurogenic sites.

BackgroundPrevious studies have shown that prenatal exposure to the mutagen N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU), a N-nitroso compound (NOC) found in the environment, disrupts developmental neurogenesis and alters memory formation. Previously, we showed that postnatal ENU treatment induced lasting deficits in proliferation of neural progenitors in the subventricular zone (SVZ), the main neurogenic region in the adult mouse brain. Parasites provide a selective pressure during the evolution of their hosts, and mediate a range of effects on ecological communities. Due to their short generation time, host-parasite interactions may also drive the virulence of opportunistic bacteria. Introducing the Time Series Change Visualization and Interpretation (TSCVI) method for the interpretation of global NDVI changes

Abstract This paper presents a novel method for the visualization of changes in vegetation related variables. This method, termed Time Series Change Visualization and Interpretation (TSCVI), allows to summarize changes associated to both vegetation productivity and phenology in a single map. To that end, three metrics are retrieved on an annual basis from plotting NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) values on a polar plot. Global aerosol modeling with MADE3 (v3.0) in EMAC (based on v2.53): model description and evaluation

Recently, the aerosol microphysics submodel MADE3 (Modal Aerosol Dynamics model for Europe, adapted for global applications, third generation) was introduced as a successor to MADE and MADE-in. It includes nine aerosol species and nine lognormal modes to represent aerosol particles of three different mixing states throughout the aerosol size spectrum.
